MDC XT12HR: Small, Lightweight Off-Road Camper With A Bathroom!

As an experienced dealer of off-road campers, it never gets old seeing a new product hit the showroom floor. We’ve had the MDC USA campers at our experience centers since the beginning of 2024, and just recently got our hands on the MDC XT12HR, which is a new floor plan for us and we are excited to show it off to you guys!

First Impressions and Overview

The very first thing I noticed about the MDC XT12HR, is its hard roof, hard wall design. Unlike most trailers its size, there are no pop-ups or pop-outs, which means no set up when you get to camp. It weighs just under 4,500 pounds and stretches 12 feet in length. This trailer is perfect for those with mid-sized trucks or SUVs that have a towing capacity between 5,000 and 7,000 pounds. This camper is compact yet packed with features that make it a fantastic option for adventurous couples. The most unique thing about the MDC XT12HR is that is comes with an INSIDE bathroom! You don’t have to take care of your business outside, the wet bath with a shower and toilet is ready to use with no set up (besides filling up those water tanks).

Top 3 Interior Highlights

Spacious Layout

Despite its compact size, the XT12 HR feels surprisingly roomy. The interior design maximizes space, providing a queen-sized bed that ensures a comfortable night’s sleep. Next to the bed, you’ll find a cozy booth that can comfortably seat two people. This setup is perfect for dining, working, or simply relaxing. The clever use of space makes it ideal for a couple looking to hit the road without feeling cramped.

The trailer also features ample storage options, including a wardrobe space where you can hang clothes and keep them wrinkle-free. This is particularly beneficial for extended trips, as it allows you to bring along enough clothing and keep it organized. Additionally, there are numerous storage compartments throughout the trailer, ensuring that everything from kitchen utensils to camping gear has its own place. The countertop space near the door adds to the functionality, providing a convenient spot for preparing meals or setting down items as you enter.

Climate Control

The XT12 HR comes equipped with a Dometic Penguin II A/C unit. This air conditioner is powerful enough to keep you cool on the hottest days, ensuring a pleasant indoor environment no matter where you are. When the temperature drops, the Dometic furnace steps in to keep you warm on cold nights. This efficient furnace ensures that you stay comfortable, allowing you to enjoy your adventures without worrying about the weather. For additional comfort, the trailer includes Sirocco fans with three speeds and timers. These fans help circulate air throughout the trailer, preventing any stuffiness and ensuring a fresh atmosphere inside.

Convenient Bathroom

By far, the standout feature of this off-road camper is its indoor wet bathroom! It is rare to find an inside bathroom in a trailer of this size. Many smaller trailers force you to set up an outside tent and take care of business out in the elements (which some people are TOTALLY fine with). If you’re like me, you prefer to be able to shower and use the toilet inside a comfortable environment. The wet bath on the MDC XT12 HR comes with a cassette toilet that allows you to empty it in various places like pit toilets or dump stations. It also has a wonderful shower that is hooked up to the Truma AquaGo on-demand hot water system for those long showers after a full day of hiking and adventuring.

Exterior Features

Durable Construction

We can’t speak highly enough about the quality and detail put into the MDC lineup of campers. We’ve put these campers through some tough off-roading tests, and they pass with flying colors every time. MDC offers a lifetime warranty on their frame and chassis, which is very rare in the RV world. They use a hot-dip galvanized Q345 steel frame that is FEA tested to meet the proper off-road standards in Australia. Australia has stricter regulations regarding what can be called an off-road trailer. The FEA testing covers five main factors: frame, chassis, suspension, chains, and attachment points.

The X-Track suspension is a proprietary independent suspension with dual gas shocks that are almost twice as thick as the competition. These shocks have been tested for years by actual users in the Australian Outback. The X-Track suspension also works in conjunction with the Megahub, a 12-inch hub with genuine Timken bearings, making it one of the best hubs for off-road campers in the world.

MDC’s motto reads, “Escape with Confidence!” and we can truly say their motto is accurate. With an MDC, you don’t have to worry about your camper making it from point A to point B.

Outdoor Kitchen

One of the most important reasons to buy an RV is for the cooking space! As a former tent camper, it was always challenging to come up with creative meals that could be made over a campfire, usually resulting in hot dogs or tin foil dinners. With the MDC XT12HR and its incredible outdoor kitchen, my camping meals have been upgraded! With the 3-burner Thetford stove, I can cook eggs, bacon, and toast bread rolls all at the same time. That’s exactly what we did this past weekend while camping with the owners from MDC. Next to the stove, there’s a sink with hot and cold water and a convenient storage shelf for sauces and food while I cook. I’ve also made steaks, stir-fry, and more in this kitchen. It’s much better than just hot dogs every night.

Efficient Storage

When out on overlanding adventures, you’re going to need places to store all your gear, from camping chairs to recovery equipment. Where will you put it all? The MDC XT12HR comes with plenty of exterior storage, including places to store jerry cans that can hold extra water or gasoline, and more storage compartments for anything you can imagine. The front storage area is open, allowing you to strap down whatever you need, while the compartments use triple-seal technology to ensure they stay completely dustproof, even if you hit some dusty trails on your journey to the campsite.

With a dry weight of under 4,500 pounds, the XT12 HR is easy to tow with a variety of vehicles. Whether you have a Land Rover, Mercedes G Wagon, or Ford Expedition, this trailer is designed to be manageable and stress-free on the road.

Off-Grid Capabilities

Equipped with a 1,500-watt inverter, a 200-amp-hour lithium battery, and 300 watts of solar panels, this trailer is ready for off-grid adventures. The elevated solar panels ensure efficient energy collection, keeping you powered up during your trips.
